In short, I understand what is going on the game just fine, but none of it connects in a narratively satisfying way. Also the hallucination sequences of the spooky high school are just there to explore a traumatic event from the MC's past that has no relation to anything that's going on in the real world.

This does not explain why your wife experiences a full pregnancy from conception to birth in the span of a single day, or why the actual apocalypse gets triggered at the end when you refuse to kill the child. The only reason I know this is because a secret document found in a secluded spot hints at it. That doesn't mean it's not bad.Īs for the actual plot itself, the game's explanation for why the cultists are the way they are is because Murkoff is up to no good again and installed radio towers nearby that is broadcasting frequencies that induce insanity and paranoia in people, as part of a broader mind control experiment. I feel like it's a cop-out to say "The game isn't supposed to make sense because the MC is going insane." That's like saying She-Hulk is supposed to be bad because the show is in on the joke. In conclusion, Outlast as a franchise is an overblown and overrated trash pile that people like to fellate for some bizarre reason. You can't add too much or the audience will become desensitized to said violence. Putting over the top violence in media is like walking a tightrope.

Here comes a steaming hot take: The Groom is not scary. It's almost like Red Barrels decided to focus on upping the violence and blood without realizing that the best parts of the original game were it's atmosphere and graphics. The rest of the game, however, is full of the same trite bullshit as most indie horrors, just with better graphics than most.Įven Whistleblower has this problem in spades. A genuinely great map put together to mask the linearity and a great horror villain to boot. The only diamond in the ruff in Outlast is the Trager sequence. Outlast, on the other hand, has nothing to disguise its linearity, and the scares get old real fuckin' fast.

Frictional Games knows how to scare a player. They are very much linear games, yes, but they are disguised to prevent you from noticing. Both of these games have extreme amounts of effort and work put into them to make them amazing horror experiences. Gore and blood and guts do not a good horror game make.Ĭompare Outlast to a game like Amnesia: The Dark Descent or SOMA. The majority of scares aren't even scares, they are simply jumpscares. I've never understood why people find this game to be "tOo SpOoKy 4 mE!" It's an overall poorly put together and extremely linear game. IN SHORT: don't be a dick and everything will be fine.
